Pulmonary Rehabilitation Course

This course last for 7 weeks. Patients are assessed prior to commencing the programme. They attend twice a week for exercise and are reassessed on completing the programme.

Patients with lung conditions including:

  • Chronic obstructive Pulmonary disease
  • Chronic asthma
  • Emphysema
  • Bronchiectasis

Are referred on to the course.

The exercise programmes may include cycle ergometry, arm ergometry, rowing ergometry and resistance exercise (light weight training). Patients are supervised throughout by the exercise physiologists of the unit.

The initial assessment consists of:

  • Interview with a Nurse
  • Spirometry
  • Height, weight and girth measurement
  • Blood pressure check
  • Walking test
  • Well being questionnaire
  • Oxygen saturation test
